Cause for celebration!

Sister Pat Forster

Lucia Arriaga Gamez is the first student from Casa Franciscana in San Rafael to graduate from the University Central of Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, with a nursing degree. She is from the village of San Pedro, one of many young women Sister Janice Wiechman and I spent lots of time with convincing her Dad to allow her to join us at Casa Franciscana. When José finally said yes, I took Lucia to the local secondary school where she finished grades 7, 8, 9 in three months. She came to the school from the high mountains under a great deal of stress, riding with potato laborers. As soon as she finished her coursework, she entered high school.

After three years of high school with us, she knew she wanted to be a nurse. It seems no one in the family thought this thin, sensitive, very beautiful girl would last around blood. Lucia loves nursing and will now work for one year in a required social service in the University Hospital for Children. We are delighted with her success and hopeful for the future that awaits her. Currently three of our 2015 graduates are enrolled at the same university. A total of 31 students have graduated from the Students in Residence program. Gracias!

Vanesa Martenez will study administration on Saturdays and work full time during the week. She was given high honors in two areas: the Generation representative chosen by her classmates and Informatica which is a specialty in computation.

Merary Nava, Karla de la Cruz and Esmeralda Peña will pursue nursing degrees; their studies will be financed by a medical doctor in San Antonio, Tex. This donation comes through an organization called Mi Casa which helps the elderly, teens and children. In February Mi Casa arrived here in San Rafael and offered eye screening and glasses to all the students and their families. The ophthalmologist will return every two years for eye exams. Last year Mi Casa and Club Leones assisted us in getting eleven pairs of glasses.
