20th Annual Blessing of the Animals

The 20th Annual Blessing of the Animals was held Saturday, September 27, at Washington Park in Little Falls. It was a great day. The weather was perfect—sunny, dry and not too hot or too cold. There were over 40 animals that came for the blessing. There was a short program consisting of prayers, song, a reading from scripture and a reading about Saint Francis of Assisi blessing doves. Each of the animals was blessed individually by either Sisters Mary Lou Eltgroth, LaVonne Schackmann, Georgine Larson or Bernarda Sanoski. Each of the animals received a small “Saint Francis protector of animals” medal, which could be attached to their collar. With the medal was a small card with an image of Saint Francis on one side and a “Prayer for my Pet” on the other side. Following the program all were invited to have refreshments. Yes, all—there were even treats for the animals.

The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, is a community of Catholic women religious who follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ, walking in the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. We believe that the living of a poor, simple and prayerful community life is a ministry of presence and witness. Our doors are open to the public to celebrate Mass in Sacred Heart Chapel and to benefit from the St. Francis Music Center and St. Francis Health & Recreation Center. We welcome those who wish to join us as sisters, associates, volunteers, transfer sisters, friends and donors.
