Good Friday Walk for Peace

Rick Dietz, Franciscan Life Center

On Good Friday, April 18, 39 people participated in the annual Walk for Peace. They walked in silence stopping at 11 places along the route that started at the convent and went down along Broadway Avenue and back. They stopped to pray at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Shelley Funeral Home, Sheriff’s Office, county jail and courthouse, Bank Square, Veteran’s Memorial, Maple Island Park, First United Church, St. Francis Health and Rec and Alverna Apartments/St. Otto’s Care Center.

It was a time to pray together remembering the needs and suffering of members of our community. If we recall the conversion story of St. Paul, Jesus asks him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me.” And Paul asks, “Who are you?” The answer comes, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.” In light of this answer we see that, if members of our community suffer, Jesus suffers also. So this walk on Good Friday remembers the suffering of Jesus in history at Calvary, but also the suffering of Jesus in our community here today. It is a great way to bring to mind the dual understanding of the suffering of Jesus on a cool crisp Good Friday morning in Little Falls.

The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, is a community of Catholic women religious who follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ, walking in the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. We believe that the living of a poor, simple and prayerful community life is a ministry of presence and witness. Our doors are open to the public to celebrate Mass in Sacred Heart Chapel and to benefit from the St. Francis Music Center and St. Francis Health & Recreation Center. We welcome those who wish to join us as sisters, associates, volunteers, transfer sisters, friends and donors.
