Yadira's Farewell Party
Posted Wed, Jun 09, 2010 01:13:28 PM

The Franciscan Welcoming had a memorable evening on Wednesday, May 28, 2010 as we farewelled Yadira Cervanates. Yadira, a native of Melrose, MN and friend of the Franciscan Sisters came to the Welcoming House two years ago. She began her studies at the St. Cloud Technical College at that time. Yadira was for all the Sisters a dear friend, companion and youthful sister. This past year she experienced and related with our Franciscan Community Volunteers, Alicia Landale, Caitie Tobin, Spencer Buchert and Will Braun and manager, Katie Janssen as well. Together the entire local community planned a dinner, prayer and entertainment for her. Yadira enjoyed the event from beginning to end, as did all of us. The Franciscan Sisters, Loretta Denfeld, Ange Mayers, Clara Stang and I were enriched by Yadira's sharing her culture, family, faith and cuisine over the two year period of time. Her goodbye card to us indicated her deep appreciation for our two year relationship as friends and sisters. We now send our best to Yadira as she continues her studies in Moorhead, MN to become a teacher. We will miss you, Yadira!

Exploring Issues Around Water
Posted Sun, Mar 21, 2010 02:22:37 PM

On March 18, 2010, the aroma of Irish stew and soda bread filled the Franciscan Welcoming House as guests arrived at 6 p.m.  for the Enrichment Evening.  Even though it was one day after St. Patrick's, one could see the green décor on the table settings add to the enjoyment of a festive dinner and evening together.

The topic for the evening centered on water issues and its importance for citizens of the US and world.  Members of the Water Committee of the Benedictine/Franciscan Social Justice Group spoke to the issues.  It included Jim Vogel, Franciscan Associate , Sister Maritherese Woida, OSB and Sister Mary Zirbes, OSF.    The evening included many facts and information on water, articles from Journals, local newspapers and magazines on water use, exploitation and overuse along with efforts in the local St. Cloud area to respect this wonderful resource of creation.  The evening ended with a prayer and sprinkling of water on the 24 persons in attendance.  The members of the Franciscan Welcoming House, Sisters Loretta Denfeld, Cordy Korkowski, Ange Mayers and Clara Stang hosted the evening.

The next and last Enrichment Evening for the season will be held on Thursday, April 15 and will feature the experiences of the four Franciscan Community Volunteers:  Will Braun, Spencer Buchert, Alicia Landale and Caitie Tobin.

Welcome Sr. Ange
Posted Thu, Feb 25, 2010 03:28:40 PM

What a great way to usher in the month of February, 2010.   Sister Ange Mayers arrived from Pisinemo, Arizona to begin life at the Franciscan Welcoming House in St. Cloud  on February 1.   This was a trip in faith for this New Munich native, having just spent about 15 ½  years ministering with a parish team at the San Solano Missions on the O'odham Nation Indian Reservation in southern Arizona.   Sister Ange comes to our St. Cloud Franciscan community as a woman of faith, deeply imbued with the Franciscan spirit of simplicity, prayer and joy.  We welcome Sister Ange and pray for her as she makes her transition from warm air to frigid temperatures.  Through it all, she brings us the love and goodness of a person shaped and grounded in God's love.  Sister Ange will work with the Franciscan Welcoming House in ministry to young adults.  She joins in Franciscan Community living with Sisters Clara Stang, Loretta Denfeld and Cordy Korkowski along with Franciscan Community Volunteers, Will Braun, Spencer Buchert, Alicia Landale and Caitlin Tobin.  We are deeply grateful to Sister Ange for saying ‘yes' to our request to have her join us at the Franciscan Welcoming House.

Taize Prayer
Posted Tue, Feb 23, 2010 07:45:19 PM

Taize (te-zay) Prayer draws its name from a small village in France, where a small ecumenical religious community developed after the Second World War. Through simple meditative chants and the beauty of lighted candles, participants are drawn into a deeper experience of God's presence in their present reality. Taize prayers are sung in many different languages around the world and express a basic faith that can awaken the spirit within. In a community setting, participants reflect in silence and listen to Scripture readings and intercessory prayers.

A group of young adults gathered at the Franciscan Welcoming House for an evening of delicious food along with Taize prayer. Sr. Cordy Korkowski and Michaela Barrett, a junior from St. Cloud State University, led us in the music. We were welcomed with the soft scent of the lighted candles as we gathered for this hour of prayer. It was indeed a time of deep peace as we rested in the Lord.
