Joining our voices with others in prayer, solidarity and action
is an effective way to accomplish long and short term social justice goals.

Networking for Social Justice
In the ongoing struggle to promote economic and social justice, the Franciscan Sisters have come to know, over the years, that it is important to ally themselves with other groups and individuals involved in promoting the common good. Both individual members and the Congregation have joined with a variety of organizations and ad hoc groups to work for human rights, ecological justice, an end to war and violence and a variety of other issues.

The Franciscan Sisters were one of the founding members of Sisters Online, a joint website project devoted to justice issues on the local, national and international levels. We continue to support and are active in this project which has attracted national attention as a collaborative effort on behalf of social justice.

Congregation leaders have been very involved in the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR). The scope of the conference’s concerns is broad and includes, among other things, collaborating in Catholic Church and societal efforts that influence systemic change and utilizing its corporate voice in solidarity with people who experience any form of violence or oppression. In addition to taking a corporate stance on issues of concern, the LCWR advocates action by its members through its frequent “Resolutions to Action.”

Membership in NETWORK, a national Catholic social justice lobby, has been held by many individual Sisters and by the Congregation for many years. The Action Alerts and information sent out by this organization have motivated many letters and phone calls to the White House and to Congressional leaders on issues such as affordable housing, health care, campaign finance reform and economic equity.

In being good stewards of their finances, the Sisters have been aided by organizations such as the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, a group which monitors corporations and applies social criteria to investments. The Sisters have been co-filers of many shareholder resolutions over the years, calling on corporations to safeguard human rights, protect the environment or reduce armaments and military sales around the world.

Pax Christi , a Catholic Peace Organization, has been a strong voice for a reduction in military spending, an end to violence and capital punishment, and a lessening of ethnic and racial tensions worldwide. The call to us as Franciscans to be peacemakers has led us to strongly support the goals of this organization.

Franciscans International is an organization supported by all branches of the Franciscan family. This organization focuses on issues of international cooperation and peacemaking, maintains a presence at the UN and sends representatives to other international peacemaking groups.

Among other organizations with which we work closely are: Global Education Associates/ Religious Orders Partnership, National Catholic Rural Life Conference, National Farm Worker Ministry, Bread for the World, Center of Concern, and Jubilee 2000. Joining our voices with others in prayer, solidarity and action is an effective way to accomplish long and short term social justice goals.
