Evaluation of Geothermal system One of our Franciscan Community goals is to walk more gently on Mother Earth and use fewer of her resources. In September 2006 we needed a new furnace so we engaged Mother Earth in the process of heating our home with a system call Geothermal. Four 180 foot wells were dug just east of the house. With an enclosed system of plastic pipes, water is circulated deep into the earth and the heat of Mother Earth warms the water to about 55 degrees before coming into the house to be heated to a desired temperature determined by our thermostat. Our house is heated then by Mother Earth and a little help from our electrical company. The source of cooling this past summer was basically Mother Earth with very little assistance from the electrical company. This was our first summer with air conditioning and we were very grateful with the unusual number of days that exceeded 90 degrees. We did a study of our savings of energy of the 12 months of FY 06-07 and we were pleased with the results. Compared with FY 05-06 we used 269.3 gallons less of propane gas. We did have an increase consumption of electrical energy. We will continue to study the system because we also know there are other variables that need to be considered.
