Sister Ann Sherman , 68
Sister Ann Sherman, 68, died on February 26, 2006, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, Minn.
Sister Ann was born on October 19, 1937, in Salem, Oreg. She was third of three children born to the late William and Ellen (Lynch) Sherman. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on July 31, 1959. She made her first profession of vows on August 12, 1961, and final vows on August 12, 1964. She was a Franciscan Sister for 46 years.
Sister Ann graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing, Breckenridge, Minn. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Mary College, Bismarck, N. Dak. She ministered as a staff nurse, night supervisor, vocation director, public health nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner. She served in Breckenridge, Little Falls, Sauk Centre, Browerville, Long Prairie, Minn.; Marshfield, Wis.; Tiptonville, Tenn.; Pine Ridge and Yankton, S. Dak.
Sister Ann initiated a program for returning Catholics, “Catholics Returning Home,” in both parishes in Yankton. She was a founding member of Emmaus House, a Catholic Worker House in Yankton. In addition, she was actively involved in the Yankton Area Banquet, a program for providing meals for the homeless, poor and the marginalized. She lived the Franciscan charism of serving the poor and marginalized all her life. Sister Ann was a gentle, reverential and caring person who was long remembered by anyone who met her. She had a deep appreciation for the death-resurrection mystery of life and nature—especially in the human person. She shared God’s tender love and concern with each person she met on her life journey, because she realized that God has given us to each other to love, help and walk beside, until we reach Him together.
She is survived by her two brothers, Reverend William, Hillsboro, N. Dak.; Reverend Edward, Grand Forks, N. Dak., and her Franciscan Community.
A wake was held for Sister Ann on February 28. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 1, 2006, at St. Francis Convent.

Sister Mary Paschaline Stenglein, 86
Sister Mary Paschaline (Bernice) Stenglein, 86, died on April 6, 2006, at Skylight Gardens, St. Cloud, Minn.
Sister Mary Paschaline was born on July 10, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minn. She was the tenth of 11 children born to the late John and Elizabeth (Fournier) Stenglein. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1937. She made first profession of vows on August 12, 1939, and final vows on August 12, 1942. She was a Franciscan Sister for 69 years.
Sister Paschaline received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn. She also studied at Cardinal Stritch College, Milwaukee, Wis.; College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn.; Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.; St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn. and the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn.
Sister Paschaline ministered as an organist, elementary teacher, parish coordinator, religious education coordinator, pastoral associate, volunteer and pastoral minister. She served at Flensburg, Morris, Foley, Browns Valley, Waite Park, Little Falls, Little Canada, Shoreview and St. Cloud, Minn.; Bluefield, W. Va.; Richmond, Va.
Sister Mary Paschaline will be remembered as a person with lots of energy, enthusiasm and always ready for a good time. She was a great people-person who always looked to the well-being of others, no matter what it cost her personally. She had a great sense of humor that helped her and those around her through difficult moments. She had an ecumenical spirit that reached out in many ways to people of other religions. She was a staunch supporter of the Right to Life Movement and was personally involved in many of its projects as well as in various support and social justice groups. She had a very special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She had a reputation for gathering and storing “stuff” which was useful to her and she gratefully shared it with others. She was ready and able to fix almost anything since she was skilled in carpentry and plumbing and came to the aid of those in need. She had a special spot in her heart for the sick, the poor, bereaved, hospitalized, homebound, senior citizens, divorced and separated. She loved to bring love and joy into the lives of people. Even in her retirement years she volunteered her time and talent in many ways. The people at Skylight Gardens in St. Cloud, where she retired in October, 2003, were very special to her. She was known to have a sweet tooth and would happily eat candy even in her later years when she had diabetes. She also had a great love for animals.
Sister Paschaline was preceded in death by all her siblings: Alice (infant), Bernadette Ebner, Esther Greeninger, Lawrence, Harold, Gilbert, Donald, Raymond, Merrill and Joseph. Survivors include many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and her Franciscan Community.
A wake was held for Sister Mary Paschaline on April 10. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 11, 2006, at St. Francis Convent.

Sister Mary Christine Wiener, 97
Sister Mary Christine (Adeline) Wiener, 97, died on May 14, 2006, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, Minn.
Sister Mary Christine (Adeline) Wiener was born on January 20, 1909, in North Prairie, Minn. She was the third of eight children born to the late Martin and Rosalia (Trettel) Wiener. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls on August 12, 1929. She made her first vows on August 12, 1931, and her final vows on August 10, 1934. She was a Franciscan Sister for 77 years.
Sister Mary Christine received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn. She also attended the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn.; Famous Artists School, Westport, Maine; and St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minn.
Sister Mary Christine was a teacher all of her life teaching in both elementary and secondary schools. She taught history, art, religion and also served as a teacher’s aide. She served in Little Falls, Foley, Alexandria, Osakis, Fergus Falls, St. Cloud, Browns Valley and Royalton.
Sister Mary Christine was a woman of deep and abiding faith in her loving God. She was a woman of integrity who saw the hand of God guiding her in every aspect of her life and she generously responded to God with prayer from the center of her being. She was thoughtful of other people and contributed her talents as best she could in each situation. Her Sisters knew her to be open, creative, generous and loyal to and with them. Her sensitive spirit responded to the beauty around and within her which she portrayed through the beautiful art work she produced in watercolor, acrylics and oils. Even in her later years she continued to share her artistic talents by teaching anyone who showed an interest. She was always willing to accept a challenge for the creation of yet another piece of artwork for some project, often for the Franciscan Sisters’ Community Relations Department. She had a sense of humor, was exceptional in her hospitality, was neat in appearance and young in spirit up to her death.
Sister Mary Christine was preceded in death by siblings: Fred, Lucine Niehaus, Adolph, and Sylvester. Survivors include: Otto, Sauk Centre; Leona Niehaus, Grass Valley, Calif.; Martha Fiedler, Sauk Centre; nieces and nephews and her Franciscan Community.
A wake was held for Sister Mary Christine on May 16. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 17, 2006, at St. Francis Convent. |

Sister Bertha (Lillian) Gerads, 78, died on June 8, 2006, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, Minn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Convent on Monday, June 12, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at St. Francis Convent on Sunday, June 11, from 4 - 8:30 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial on June 12. A wake service will be held at the Convent at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 11.
Arrangements are by the Brenny & Simonet Funeral Home, Little Falls.
Sister Bertha was born on September 6, 1927 near St. Francis, Minn. She was the fourth of nine children born to the late Martin and Mary (Roettger) Gerads. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1944. She made her first profession of vows on August 12, 1946, and final vows on August 12, 1950. She was a Franciscan Sister for 62 years.
She ministered in health care and pastoral ministry. She served in Little Falls, Browns Valley, Breckenridge, Alexandria, Moorhead, Perham, Onamia, St. Cloud, Flensburg, St. Paul, Nashwauk, Pengilly, Minn.; Dodgeville, Wis.; Chimayo, N. Mex.; Durán, Ecuador.
Sister Bertha is survived by siblings: Paul (Cecilia), Freeport; Hubert (Elaine), Albany; Elinor, New Hope; Teresa Allen (Jim), Ellendale; Martin (Virginia), New Hope; Gregory (Dorothea), Winona; Sister Joan, Quito, Ecuador; Veronica (Enrique) Salazar, Fort Myers, Fla.; nieces and nephews; her Franciscan Community and associate friends of Durán Ecuador. |

Sister Mary Josine (Veronica) Schneider, 95, died on October 8, 2006, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, Minn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Convent, on Wednesday, October 11, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Shelley Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at St. Francis Convent from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Wednesday, October 11. A wake service will be held at St. Francis Convent at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10.
Sister Mary Josine was born on March 17, 1911, in Superior, Wis. She was the seventh of nine children born to the late Joseph and Gertrude (Keppers) Schneider. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1930. She made first profession of vows on August 12, 1932, and final vows on August 12, 1935. She has been a Franciscan Sister for 76 years.
Sister Mary Josine ministered in education and counseling in Little Falls, Flensburg, Sauk Centre, Prior Lake, Minnesota; Milwaukee and Cudahy, Wis. In 1989 she retired due to ill health.
Sister Mary Josine was preceded in death by siblings: Loretta, Sister Bernadine, OSF, Marie Schmitz, Joseph, Robert and Dorothy Bruneau. Survivors include: Sister Lorraine, MMS, Philadelphia, Pa., and Sister Loretto, OSF, Little Falls; nieces and nephews and her Franciscan Community.

Sister Mary Caroline (Teresa) Torborg, 93, died on November 16, 2006, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, Minn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Convent on Tuesday, November 21 at 11 a.m. Friends may call at St. Francis Convent on Monday, November 20, from 4 - 8 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Tuesday. Arrangements are by the Emblom-Brenny Funeral Service, Little Falls. A wake service will be held at the Convent at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 20.

She was a Franciscan Sister for 77 years.
Sister Caroline ministered in healthcare and retreat ministry. She was the Director of St. Francis School of Nursing, Breckenridge and Director of St. Gabriel’s School of Nursing, Little Falls. She served in Breckenridge, Little Falls, Prior Lake, St. Paul, Onamia, Minn. ; Random Lake, Wis. and Lexington, Tenn.
Sister Caroline was preceded in death by siblings: Alphonse, Helen Heying, Theodore, Hilarius, Veronica Behnen, Leonard, Catherine Stommes, Bruno and Cyril. Survivors include siblings: Martha Behnen, Cordelia Becker and Dorothy (Elmer) Brisse, Richmond; sisters-in-law Bernadette Torborg Schefers and Martha Torborg, Richmond; nieces and nephews and her Franciscan Community.
