Marilyn and Rollin Gates
Rollie and I have had a long-standing relationship as Franciscan Associates, beginning
with Sister Aggie Soenneker’s invitation to be part of the early development of the Associate Program. Our lives have progressed through many stages since then and our involvement has varied, especially during the years when our children were young and we were both working. Despite those changes, our Associate relationship has always included the friendship and support of the sisters. With them we have shared mutual efforts to stay faithful to our spiritual journey, find ways to serve others, deepen our prayer life, and live with respect for the many gifts of creation. The years have also included many wonderful conversations, sharing meals and special events, being part of prayer/discussion groups and always being welcomed when we and our family came to the Motherhouse.
We are also fortunate to belong to a wonderful church community, St. Francis Cabrini, in Minneapolis, Minn. Being part of their Marriage Preparation program, the RCIA/Entryway Program and music and liturgy planning have always given us the sense that we are doubly blessed by anything we have given. For us, it is a very concrete way to live out the spirit of Francis and Clare. In addition, Marilyn has had the opportunity of working with Sister Joanne Klinnert & staff at Sabbath House in their prayer & retreat ministry. Last summer she was privileged to be part of the Liturgy Planning Committee for the 2007 Franciscan Federation. During that time, she had an opportunity to work closely with several sisters from Little Falls, in addition to Franciscans from other communities. It was a wonderful time of connecting with new and old friends and being immersed in the Franciscan spirit.
Most importantly, we feel gratitude for our connection with the Franciscans and for the many ways that relationship has enriched our lives.
