Who is Saint Elizabeth of Hungary?

Elizabeth of Hungary was a queen, the wife of King Louis IV.

Her husband died at a young age, leaving her with three young children. Due to the hostility of her husband’s family, she was forced to flee the castle with her children and take refuge in a monastery. She eventually regained her rights and provided for her children, after which she took the habit of a Franciscan in 1228.

She generously distributed her goods, building a hospital with part of her dowry. Here she cared for the poor, the sick and the outcasts. She is known for her generosity to the poor.

She died in 1231, at the age of 24. She was canonized in 1235. Her feast is celebrated on November 17 each year.

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is a fitting patron for those who share their possessions with those less fortunate.
