AS Denis Paul, Cleveland Heights, Ohio
“While so many grew up with professional parents and took piano lessons and went to summer camp, when I was little my father was a carpenter and my mother worked at McDonald’s. We delivered newspapers, played street hockey, and camped as a family in a tiny camper trailer. People in my congregation are either dismissive of my manual skills or amazed by them. In comparison to the doctors and lawyers and community activists I minister with, my hands are coarse.
“What I love about the sisters is that they all seem to be able to live in the world of thoughts and ideas while being completely embodied. They know how to exegete sacred text, and milk a cow. Now, these are people I want to be with, people who make me feel at home.”Photo caption: Faithful Fools Quentin Alwell, Sister Carmen Barsody, Alex Darr, Sister Susan Knutson, ASs Melissa Farfarman, Denis Paul, Megan Rohrer, Kay Jorgensen
