Intercultural Consultation Services –Application sponsored by Sister Mary Hroscikoski

Intercultural Consultation Services is a faith-centered organization committed to promoting understanding, respect and mutuality among peoples of different cultures. It offers a four-week program designed for missioners preparing for long-term work in the mission field and provides training for individuals and groups called to cross-cultural settings. A OWM grant allowed the ministry to purchase a laptop computer, software and printer. It also provided partial scholarships for five women religious to attend the program.

Haitian Mission Fund – Application sponsored by Sister Bev Weidner

A OWM grant helped the Haitian Mission Fund established four mobile dysplasia clinics in the mountain regions of Haiti, where women have virtually no access to health care. The grant allowed 1,000 women to be screened for cervical cancer. Many were treated for urinary and sexually transmitted infections. Women were tested for HIV, and those found positive were referred to a local AIDS clinic. Breast and abdominal masses were found in several women, who were then referred to hospitals for further treatment.

Centro Hispano, Waite Park – Application sponsored by Sister Carol Virnig

The need for ongoing formation of laity within the Hispanic community continues to be a challenge for St. Joseph’s Parish in Waite Park, where 300 Spanish-speaking families are part of the congregation. An OWM grant of helped cover costs of books and materials for faith formation; instruments and liturgical resources for worship; and retreats for youth and adults. This outreach to the immigrant population, which started over ten years ago by Sister Carol Virnig, nurtures the people in their Catholic faith and provides a church home along with other services for newcomers.

Strong Mothers, Healthy Babies, Nicaragua – Application sponsored by Sister Carmen Barsody

Associates Mercedes Gonzales and Salvadora Gomez offer a program for mothers and infants in a barrio of Nicaragua where the Franciscan Sisters served as missionaries and operated a soy kitchen in the 1990s. Through classes and home visits, Strong Mothers, Health Babies educates young women on proper nutrition and exercise during pregnancy and the benefits of breastfeeding, along with ways to ensure healthy development for their babies and young children. This report ends a two-year grant which covered stipends for the health educators and food and supplies for the program. Thirty-two women and their infants were served.

The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, is a community of Catholic women religious who follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ, walking in the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. We believe that the living of a poor, simple and prayerful community life is a ministry of presence and witness. Our doors are open to the public to celebrate Mass in Sacred Heart Chapel and to benefit from the St. Francis Music Center and St. Francis Health & Recreation Center. We welcome those who wish to join us as sisters, associates, volunteers, transfer sisters, friends and donors.
